Operations at Gold Fields Ltd.'s South Deep gold mine in South Africa was suspended for a day after a leader of a trackless crew died after she was hit by a rock that came loose following a series of four seismic events in quick succession. Three other workers sustained minor injuries.
According to a June 3 statement, the miner said three of the seismic events ranged between 1.4 and 1.9 in magnitude. The underground corridor where the accident occurred will remain closed pending a safety check.
This was the first death at the mine this year, the miner said. First-quarter production at South Deep totaled 34,000 ounces of gold.
