Toyota's exports rise for 9th straight month in April; Japanese sales gain 1.8%

Toyota Motor Corp.'s total sales in Japan rose for the first time in three months in April, boosted by better results at the company's Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd. and Hino Motors Ltd. subsidiaries.

Total sales in Japan increased 1.8% year over year to 168,146 vehicles as sales of trucks and buses rose 13.8% and passenger car sales fell 0.5%. The Toyota division's sales decreased 0.3% year over year to 115,003, while sales of Daihatsu were up 4.6% and Hino's sales rose 37.1% from a year earlier.

The Japanese automaker's exports increased for the ninth straight month in April, rising 20.7% year over year to 183,975 vehicles due to a 23.5% increase in passenger car exports and a 3.0% rise in exports of trucks and buses.

Toyota Motor's worldwide production was up 3.3% from a year ago to 846,120 vehicles. Production in Japan fell by 0.8% year over year but production outside of Japan increased 6.2% year over year to a record high for April of 510,893 vehicles due to the Toyota division's increased production in North America, Latin America and Africa and higher production by Daihatsu in Indonesia.

The automaker's Japanese sales were down 2.6% year over year in the first four months of 2018 but exports were up 16.8% in the period. Worldwide production fell 0.6% year over year to 3.5 million vehicles.

The company's North American unit posted a 4.7% year-over-year decline in sales volume in April, to 192,348 units from 201,926 units.
