The U.S. grid opened the year with 1,616 MW of capacity additions completed in January, with a gas-fired plant in Ohio accounting for almost half the total.
Four units were announced in January amounting to 634 MW, with 90% of that capacity wind and the remaining 10% solar.

Completed projects
Three units came online at the Carroll County Energy Center in Carroll County, Ohio, a 238-MW combined-cycle steam turbine and two 231-MW combined-cycle combustion turbines. The plant's ownership is split among a number of entities, with ULLICO Inc., Prudential Capital Group L.P., TIAA and Advanced Power Services (NA) Inc. each holding a 20% ownership stake and Japanese utility companies Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc. and Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. holding 10% each. Announcing the plant's completion was private developer Advanced Power AG. The output of the Carroll County plant is sold into the PJM Interconnection market.

The Red Pine Wind Project is the second-largest plant to begin operations in January. The 200-MW wind facility, owned by EDF Group subsidiary EDF Renewable Energy, is located in Lincoln County, Minn., and features 100 wind turbines manufactured by Vestas Wind Systems A/S. The output is sold into the Midcontinent ISO market.
Announced projects
The two largest projects that were announced in January are owned by Apex Clean Energy, and both are being developed through a joint venture with a power authority set up by the Sioux Nation.
The 450-MW Ta'teh Topah Wind Project is scheduled to be built in Dewey County, S.D., on the Cheyenne River Reservation, with an estimated construction cost of $832.5 million. It is scheduled to come online in October 2021. The second-largest unit is the 120-MW Pass Creek Wind Project in Bennett County, S.D., on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The wind farm is also scheduled to come online in October 2021, and has an estimated construction cost of $222 million. The output from both facilities will be sold into the Southwest Power Pool region.
