Boeing posts steep decline in aircraft deliveries in August; Airbus widens lead

Boeing Co.'s commercial aircraft deliveries fell to 18 jets in August from 64 a year ago, widening the year-to-date gap between Boeing and European rival Airbus SE, as 737 MAX jets remain grounded globally.

In the first eight months of 2019, Boeing's deliveries dropped to 276 aircraft from 481 in the year-ago period.

Meanwhile, Airbus delivered 42 aircraft in August, raising its year-to-date total to 500.

So far in 2019, Airbus has recorded net orders for 95 aircraft, compared with Boeing's negative 85.

Boeing continues to trail Airbus in aircraft deliveries and net orders this year as the global grounding of the company's 737 MAX jets entered its seventh month.

Boeing expects the troubled aircraft to return to service in the fourth quarter and plans to increase the monthly production rate of the 737 program in 2020.
