Consumer financial watchdog to lose its COO

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will lose a senior member of its staff when COO Sartaj Alag leaves the agency. Alag will leave the agency next month, Morning Consult reported March 16.

Alag was appointed COO in 2013 and had managed consumer complaints in the CFPB's Office of Consumer Response prior to that promotion. Before working at the CFPB, Alag had worked at Capital One Financial Corp., spending some of his time there as president of Capital One's Canadian subsidiary.

As COO, Alag was in charge of handling project management and internal communications support for the bureau. The internal workings of the CFPB have been a contentious issue ever since former Director Richard Cordray departed the agency, leaving a power vacuum that resulted in a publicized battle between Cordray-appointee Leandra English and President Donald Trump's interimpick, Mick Mulvaney.

Mulvaney took temporary leadership and has since launched efforts to review and revise the CFPB's operations.

In October 2017, CFPB Assistant Director of Enforcement Anthony Alexis left the agency. Cordray was still director at the time.
