X5 to pilot new technologies that detect expired goods

X5 Retail Group NV said May 22 that it is testing three labeling technologies that are able to identify expired products.

The Russian food retailer will develop and test two types of color-changing labels, developed in partnership with Tomsk State University students, that warn if the required storage or transportation temperatures of a product are not maintained.

The first type of color-changing label would notify X5's customers and store staff of any temperature issues in products, particularly frozen goods, during transportation or storage. Should the product thaw, the label would irreversibly change color.

The second type of labeling technology would enable customers to track a product's actual freshness and help staff keep fresh goods on shelves. The label would change color at different speeds, depending on the temperature.

The third type of label is a bar code to block the sale of expired products as it provides information about a product's shelf life. X5 said this particular type of technology is already being tested in 200 Pyaterochka stores in Greater Moscow.

The announcement comes just days after the retailer launched its automatic replenishment software in its Perekrestok and Karusel stores and distribution centers.
