Stripes Group invests in organic grocer Erewhon

Growth equity firm Stripes Group LLC invested an undisclosed sum in organic grocer and cafe Erewho Trading Co., Forbes reported.

Stripes Group now owns a substantial minority stake in Erewho, which does business as Erewhon.

The injected capital will be used to open more stores in Orange County, Calif., and in the northern part of the state. The chain could launch in New York City in a few years, according to the report.

Erewhon sells organic foods, wellness and beauty products as well as household items. Founded in Boston in 1966, it moved to California three years later. It has five branches in Calabasas, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades and Venice in Southern California. Forbes said a sixth branch in Silverlake is in progress.

Stripes Group is a New York-based firm that makes investments of between $10 million and $150 million in internet, software, healthcare IT and branded consumer product companies.
