Energy Resources to cease Ranger uranium mine operations by January 2021

Energy Resources of Australia Ltd. plans to stop mining and processing at its Ranger uranium project in Northern Territory, Australia, by January 2021, and final rehabilitation will be completed by January 2026.

In its mine closure plan released June 5, the company said it will continue to supply its customers with uranium oxide processed from existing stockpiles until late 2020.

The preferred closure strategy involves backfilling pit one and pit three following tailings deposition, starting with the most contaminated materials and residual waste material remaining on the land surface.

Energy Resources is owned 68.4% by Rio Tinto.
