South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who replaced Jacob Zuma in the position, appointed Gwede Mantashe as the country's new mines minister, Miningmx reported Feb. 26.
Mantashe is a former general-secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, and replaced Mosebenzi Zwane in the role.
Zuma was ordered by his own African National Congress party to step down earlier this month.
According to a Feb. 21 Reuters report, the South African parliament was planning to investigate allegations of influence peddling against Zwane. He was appointed to the position in 2015, and was seen as a close ally to Zuma.
The cabinet reshuffle resulted in the re-appointment of Nhlanhla Nene as finance minister.
