AI startup Graphcore gets $200M investment from Microsoft, others

Graphcore Ltd., a U.K.-based artificial intelligence chipmaker, raised $200 million in a series D funding round from existing and investors, including Microsoft Corp. and the investment arm of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG.

The round was led by existing investor Atomico and new investor Sofina, while Merian Global Investors (UK) Ltd. also joined the round.

Other participants in the round include Amadeus Capital Partners Ltd., Robert Bosch Venture Capital GmbH, C4 Ventures, Dell Technologies Capital, Draper Esprit PLC, Foundation Capital, Pitango and Sequoia Capital Advisors LLC.

Graphcore said Dec. 18 that the round values the company at $1.7 billion and brings the total capital raised to date to over $300 million.

Goldman Sachs advised Graphcore on the financing and Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP provided legal advice.

Headquartered in Bristol, England, Graphcore designs semiconductors used for artificial intelligence applications.
