The Hibernia drilling platform, off the east coast of Newfoundland, has returned to production after being shut on Aug. 17 due to a power outage and oil spill.
Hibernia Management And Development Co. Ltd., or HMDC, said in a Sept. 27 release that the move comes after a comprehensive review of its systems and operations as well as discussions with the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board.
An estimated 2,200 liters of oil spilled into the Atlantic Ocean after the accident, according to an Aug. 19 report from CBC News. The company attributed the spill to a temporary loss of power on the platform late on Aug. 17.
ExxonMobil Canada Ltd., a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corp., holds a 33.125% stake in HMDC. Other shareholder companies include Chevron Corp. unit Chevron Canada Resources Ltd., Suncor Energy Inc., Canada Hibernia Holding Corp., Murphy Oil Corp. and Equinor ASA subsidiary Equinor Canada Ltd.
