New York's largest community solar project finishes construction

Construction wrapped up on New York's largest community solar project: Delaware River Solar's 2.7-MW Baer Road solar farm in Sullivan County.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on March 13 announced the completion of the solar project, which received $1.3 million in funding through the state's $1 billion NY-Sun initiative. Delaware River Solar's first project in its hometown comprises approximately 9,800 solar panels and according to the Cuomo administration, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,670 metric tons annually.

Community-shared solar energy, which enables local customers to purchase solar power through shares in a local facility, has become a focus of the Cuomo administration's Reforming the Energy Vision program to modernize New York's power grid and procure 50% of the state's electricity needs from renewable sources by 2030.

In a statement, New York's energy czar Richard Kauffman said community solar allows consumers who cannot install solar panels on their own roofs the chance to reap the benefits of cleaner and more affordable energy while saving money and limiting climate change.

In February, Cuomo declared that solar generating capacity in the state had increased more than 1,000% from December 2011 to December 2017, while leveraging more than $2.8 billion in private investments. On March 9, Cuomo announced the awarding of an additional $1.4 billion to 26 new large-scale renewable energy projects, including solar power.
