Dominion partners with Vanguard Renewables to develop renewable gas projects

Dominion Energy Inc. and Vanguard Renewables LLC formed a $200 million strategic partnership to develop projects that would convert methane into renewable energy.

The partnership's projects will aim to capture methane from U.S. dairy farms and convert it into renewable natural gas, or RNG, for U.S. consumers, according to a Dec. 11 news release. Projects are being developed in Georgia, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah, with others planned nationwide.

Under the partnership, Dominion will take ownership of the projects and market the RNG, while Vanguard Renewables unit Clean Energy Investment USA will design, develop and operate the projects. The partnership's plan is expected to bring down annual CO2 equivalent emissions by over 450,000 metric tons, according to the release.

Dominion and Smithfield Foods Inc. recently doubled its investment in RNG projects to $500 million, from $250 million, through 2028. The companies own a joint venture called Align Renewable Natural Gas for capturing methane from hog farms to convert into natural gas.

Dominion provides natural gas and electricity services to almost 7.5 million customers in 18 states. Vanguard Renewables specializes in farm-based anaerobic digestion to produce renewable energy.
