Total U.S. coal rail traffic for the week ended Aug. 17 declined 8.2% year over year to 85,454 carloads, according to data from the Association of American Railroads.
Year-to-date coal rail traffic declined 6.5% through the week, while total rail traffic for the week decreased 5.2% year over year to 537,617 carloads and intermodal units.

BNSF Railway Co. coal shipment volumes clocked in at 38,404 carloads in the week ended Aug. 17, increasing 13.4% from the previous week's 33,852 carloads and declining 3.8% from the 39,907 carloads in the year-ago week.
Union Pacific Corp.'s coal shipment volumes this week were at 20,959 carloads, up 6.6% from 19,661 carloads the previous week but declining 14.0% from the previous year's weekly volume of 24,380.
Eastern railroad CSX Transportation Inc.'s shipment volumes of coal stood at 16,404 carloads, jumping 14.4% from the previous week's 14,337 carloads and decreasing 13.1% from the 18,868 carloads the same week in the previous year.
Norfolk Southern Corp.'s coal shipment volumes totaled 16,647 carloads for the week, up 3.3% from the previous week's 16,114 carloads but declining 15.8% from the 19,764 carloads the same week a year ago.
Kansas City Southern's latest weekly coal shipment volume was 2,595 carloads, decreasing 7.9% from 2,819 carloads the previous week. The railroad serves 10 U.S. states and Mexico.
