Carrefour unions to strike over job cuts

French retailer Carrefour SA's primary unions, the Confédération Française Démocratique du Travail and Force Ouvrière, urged company workers to take part in a nationwide strike March 31 to protest planned job cuts by the retailer, Reuters reported March 13, citing a statement from Confédération Française Démocratique du Travail.

The job cuts are part of Carrefour's transformation plan called Carrefour 2022, which aims to streamline the company's online platforms, open 2,000 convenience stores, shutter underperforming stores and slash about 2,400 jobs in France in a bid to improve business amid declining hypermarket sales.

Reuters said the unions are also protesting the company's move to reduce employees' profit share payout to €57 per worker from the previous 600.
