Ford recalls nearly 1.4 million cars over steering wheels potentially detaching

Ford Motor Co. recalled about 1.4 million cars in North America due to safety risks arising from steering wheels that may loosen over time and even detach from the steering column.

The cars being recalled are certain Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles from model years 2014 through 2018. More than 1.3 million of the vehicles are in the U.S. and the rest in Canada and Mexico.

The problem allegedly caused two accidents and one injury, according to Ford.

The car maker said dealers will replace steering wheel bolts with longer ones that have stronger threads and bigger nylon patches that will prevent any loosening and allow proper torque retention.

Ford also announced the recall of about 6,000 vehicles in North America due to the risk of engines catching fire from clutch pressure plate fracture. The cars affected are certain 2013 to 2016 Ford Focus and 2013-2015 Ford Fusion models.
