U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton said European companies could face sanctions if they do not comply with U.S. President Donald Trump's demand to sever commercial ties with Iran.
"It's possible. It depends on the conduct of other governments," Bolton told CNN, when asked whether European companies could be targeted.
"I think the Europeans will see that it's in their interests ultimately to come along with us," he said.
European leaders, including those of Britain, France and Germany, expressed disappointment at Trump's decision to re-impose sanctions on Iran after the U.S. withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
European officials are planning to seek exemptions from the sanctions or longer grace periods for key companies that do business in Iran.
