Hawaiian Electric Cos. have formally launched a request for proposals for 300 MW of new, grid-scale renewable energy projects in Hawaii.
The Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. utilities are seeking 220 MW for Oahu, 60 MW for Maui and 20 MW for Hawaii Island, with an option to include energy storage in the bids.
The RFP is the first stage of a proposed two-stage process to add renewable resources through 2022, so developers can take advantage of federal investment tax credits before they expire, the utilities said a March 8 press release.
Proposals are due through April 30. The utilities, Hawaiian Electric Co. Inc., Maui Electric Co. Ltd. and Hawaii Electric Light Co. Inc., expect to select developers and enter contract negotiations in September.
