Catalonia's ousted leader withdraws bid to reclaim regional presidency

Deposed Catalan President Carles Puigdemont said he was abandoning his bid to be reappointed as head of the Spanish region in favor of another separatist leader, Jordi Sanchez, BBC News reported.

Puigdemont announced his decision on social media, saying it was an attempt to end the political standoff that followed Catalonia's illegal declaration of independence in October 2017, which prompted Spain to sack the regional government and impose direct rule.

Puigdemont and some of his cabinet members remain in self-exile in Belgium while Sanchez and several other Catalan separatist leaders are detained, facing charges over their roles in the independence movement.

Separatist parties won the majority in the December 2017 regional election.
