Samsung unveils Galaxy S8 with voice assistant Bixby

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. on March 29 unveiled its flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S8 and S8+, which will be available for sale starting April 21.

Both the smartphones will come with digital assistant Bixby that will help users navigate through apps and services with voice, touch, vision and text commands. Upon its launch, Bixby's Voice function will integrate with Samsung native apps and features including Camera, Contacts, Gallery, Messages and Settings, with the plan to expand its capabilities to include more Samsung and third-party apps in the near future.

The Galaxy S8 phone will be available with a 5.8-inch screen, while the S8+ will have a 6.2-inch screen. The phones are IP68 water and dust resistant, supporting MicroSD cards of up to 256 GB.

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ come with an 8MP F1.7 Smart autofocus front camera and 12MP F1.7 Dual Pixel rear camera. The phones feature Samsung Knox, a "defense-grade security platform," and will feature biometric technologies like fingerprint scanning, iris scanning and facial recognition.

Other features of the phone include Samsung Connect, which enables users to manage their smart devices; Samsung Health, which helps users stay fit; and Samsung Pay, which allows users to pay through a digital wallet at all places they can use a credit or debit card.

In other news, Samsung also introduced true 4K video and 360-degree content capture capabilities to its new Gear 360 camera, which can be connected to Galaxy S8 and S8+. The new Gear 360 comes with 8.4-megapixel image sensors and Bright Lens F2.2 on both dual fisheye lenses.

Samsung also announced a dock accessory, Samsung DeX, which is compatible with the Galaxy S8 and provides a desktop-like experience, enabling consumers to, among other things, access apps, edit documents, browse the internet, reply to messages and watch videos directly through the smartphone using a larger display, keyboard and mouse.
