Healthcare added 23,900 jobs in August; growth slows for 2nd straight month

While data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that healthcare job growth slowed for the second straight month, the industry still added nearly 24,000 jobs in August.

The monthly jobs report from BLS, which was released Sept. 6, showed that the healthcare sector added approximately 23,900 jobs in August, down from the 29,400 and 32,600 jobs added in July and June, respectively. The healthcare industry has added about 392,000 jobs in the last 12 months and approximately 252,000 jobs in 2019, according to the agency's data.

The August numbers were primarily driven by ambulatory healthcare services, which added about 12,100 jobs.

Ambulatory services refers to treatment given at outpatient facilities without a patient being admitted to a hospital or other facility, according to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, a congressional Medicare adviser. Ambulatory facilities include dialysis centers, hospital outpatient centers, ambulatory surgery centers and physicians' offices.

August was ambulatory services' slowest month in 2019; however, it has been a strong jobs driver for healthcare all year. Ambulatory services added approximately 23,200 jobs in July. Over 12,000 jobs have been added in ambulatory services every month of 2019, with a peak of 33,200 jobs added in March, according to BLS data.

Hospitals followed ambulatory services with about 8,800 jobs added in August, and nursing and residential care facilities added about 3,000.

Overall, nonfarm payroll employment rose by 130,000 in the U.S. in August, and the unemployment rate remained flat at 3.7% for the third straight month, according to the report.
