Facebook to purchase 200 MW from Apex Clean Energy wind project

Facebook Inc. will purchase 200 MW of power from a Texas wind project owned by Ares Management Corp.'s Ares Infrastructure and Power Group.

That power will come from what is being referred to as Aviator Wind East, an approximately 200-MW portion of the larger 525-MW Aviator Wind project located in Coke County, Texas, in the Electric Reliability Council Of Texas service territory. Developer Apex Clean Energy Inc. plans for Aviator Wind East to be complete by 2020. Facebook has set a goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 75%, and to support 100% of its operations by renewable energy, by 2020.

"As part of our goal to support 100% of our operations with renewable energy, we want to help drive the energy transition and increase access to wind and solar power around the world," Urvi Parekh, renewable energy manager at Facebook, said in a news release.

Technology companies including Facebook have led the way in corporate renewable energy purchases. In 2018, the company held a 14% market share for corporate and industrial renewable energy power purchases, with 2.2 GW obtained under 24 power purchase agreements.

The project will be Ares Infrastructure and Power's eleventh investment in wind projects, the company said. It has invested in a total of 4 GW of wind power generation.
