Codelco chairman pushes for reappointment of CEO

Codelco Chairman Oscar Landerretche said that CEO Nelson Pizarro should be reappointed in the role when his term ends in 2018, in order to maintain the Chilean state miner's focus on cost cutting and spending, Bloomberg News reported Dec. 1.

"A lot of people including myself are promoting the idea that Nelson continues on as CEO for a couple of years if possible," Landerretche said in an interview at Asia Copper Week in Shanghai.

Landerretche added that Pizarro has played a critical role in the drive to lower spending and force a reduction in costs.

The chairman has been trying to persuade Pizarro as well as politicians from all parties for the CEO's extension in the role.

Landerretche's term also ends next year, when Codelco's management will be reshuffled by an incoming government in Chile.
