Paraguay swears in new finance minister

Paraguay's deputy finance minister Lea Duarte Giménez was sworn in as the country's new finance minister after Santiago Peña resigned to run for president, according to a government news release.

Giménez, the first female finance minister in the history of Paraguay, took office June 6. As expected, Peña stepped down as he works to secure the presidential nomination for the Colorado party, 5días reported.

In taking office, Giménez said that she will continue with the current government's economic policy.

In addition, the new minister expressed her position regarding debt policy, mentioning it will rest on evidence based on technical analysis. "We are confident on what is being carried out is responsible borrowing," the executive remarked.

Giménez holds a Ph.D in economics from Lehigh University, a master's degree in economics from the University of Iowa and an economics degree from Emporia State University. She has also worked as a consultant and economist at the World Bank.
