Duke Energy Kentucky seeks to increase electric base rates by $45.6M

Duke Energy Kentucky Inc. is requesting state regulators to approve an electric base rate increase of about $45.6 million, according to a Sept. 3 company news release.

If approved, typical residential customers using 1,000 kWh of electricity per month would see an increase of $15.62 in their bills to $112.08 per month, or an average increase of 12.5%.

In its filing to the Kentucky Public Service Commission, the Duke Energy Corp. subsidiary also proposed to eliminate a "convenience fee" for customers when paying monthly bills, to establish an electric vehicle charging pilot program, and to build a 5.5-MW distribution battery storage pilot project in Edgewood, Ky.

Duke Energy Kentucky also plans to create a program that would allow customers to procure renewable energy resources, with the cost and net revenues billed to the customer through a new tariff.
