Petrobras: Vessel crack creates oil spill in Campos Basin

Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. said cracks on the hull of floating production storage and offloading vessel Cidade do Rio de Janeiro resulted in an oil spill in the Campos Basin off the coast of Brazil, according to an Aug. 26 news release.

The cracks and spill were discovered by vessel operator MODEC Inc. In a separate Aug. 26 news release, Petrobras said about 1.2 cubic meters of residual oil was collected, but an additional leak of 6.6 cubic meters was found.

Seven collection and dispersion vessels are operating on the site, plus four support vessels and one helicopter. The 54 people aboard the Cidade do Rio de Janeiro have been removed, Petrobras said.

The vessel has been out of operation since 2018 and is being retired.
