Facebook Inc. expanded its headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., with the completion of its latest project, the MPK 21 building.
The new building, designed by Frank Gehry, has a 3.6-acre rooftop garden featuring more than 200 trees and is built with environmentally friendly materials, the company said in a Sept. 4 blog post.
The roof includes 1.4 MW of photovoltaic solar panels that will generate nearly 2 million kWh of electricity annually, the company said, adding that the building is designed to gain LEED Platinum certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.
The social media networking company also enrolled in Peninsula Clean Energy's ECO100 energy option to reduce its carbon footprint.
Additionally, Facebook said it is planning to complete a 2-acre park with a public plaza and event space in its Menlo Park headquarters next year, which will serve as the location for Facebook Festivals, mobile farmers' market and other local programs.
