New Hope secures government approval for Australian coal mine expansion

New Hope Corp. Ltd. on Jan. 20 said the federal government approved the expansion of its New Acland coal mine in Queensland, Australia.

Specifically, the government granted the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act approval for the mine's revised stage 3 continuation project, but the company still needs a number of state government permits before its board can consider a final investment decision.

Following a recent hearing in the Queensland Land Court, the company expects recommendations on its mining lease and environmental authority application to be issued to Queensland Minister for Natural Resource and Mines Anthony Lynham around April.

According to New Hope, the revised expansion plan for New Acland will extend current operations to about 2029 and will create employment for up to 435 people directly and 2,300 indirectly.
