Sierra Metals Inc. said March 16 that a group of unionized contract employees plans to stage a strike the same day at the polymetallic Yauricocha mine in Peru, after its Minera Corona subsidiary received a strike notice from the Union of the Mine and Metallurgical Workers of Minera Corona.
While the group represents less than 10% of the mine's workforce, the company said the labor action could result in a stoppage of mining and milling operations.
Sierra Metals management applied to the Peruvian Ministry of Labor to have the action declared illegal and established a contingency plan to protect the mine's assets and ensure the safety of nonunionized workers, who will continue to work.
