Reliance Jio, Zee Entertainment strike new content deal

India's Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and Essel Group-owned Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. have inked a new content deal that will allow Jio subscribers access to Zee's content including 37 live television channels, The Economic Times (India) reported Oct. 9.

Zee's entire content catalog will reportedly be made available to over 227 million Jio users.

Jio Director Akash Ambani said the deal was in tandem with the company's strategy to provide quality local and global content to push digital inclusion while Amit Goenka, CEO of Zee International Inc. and Z5 Global said Jio's reach will allow Zee to cater to consumers wanting to consume content-on-the-go.

The new agreement resolves a deadlock that followed after Zee removed 35 live TV channels and more than 200,000 hours of video-on-demand content from Jio in August after failing to agree on pricing.

Earlier, Zee also struck a content deal with telco Bharti Airtel Ltd., to develop exclusive content for the video-on-demand app Airtel TV and Zee's over-the-top app ZEE5.

Zee has also planned to convert all its free-to-air channels into pay channels.
