El Paso Electric Co. customers set a new peak demand for electricity of about 1,986 MW on Aug. 26, 2.9% or 57 MW higher than the peak recorded on June 26, 2017.
This preliminary indication is still subject to final verification, El Paso Electric said in an Aug. 29 news release. The higher energy demand was primarily attributed to "unseasonably" hot weather late in the summer, as well as increases in customer base for the utility over the last two years.
On Aug. 7, El Paso Electric customers also set a peak demand of approximately 1,952 MW, which was about 1% higher than the previous record set in 2017.
