Va. coal exports open 2018 with 12.5% YOY recovery

Coal exports from the Hampton Roads port facilities in Virginia climbed 12.5% year over year to 2.9 million tons in January but fell 8.5% from December 2017's total, according to data obtained Feb. 5 from the Virginia Maritime Association.

At Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Lamberts Point facility, which primarily handles metallurgical coal, coal exports reached 1.2 million tons in January, up 4.5% from 1.2 tons of coal delivered in the year-ago period.

Kinder Morgan Inc.'s Pier IX facility, which mostly handles thermal coal, went down 18.5% year over year to 584,374 tons, compared to 716,892 tons in January 2017.

Dominion Terminal Associates LLP, owned by coal producers Contura Energy Inc. and Arch Coal Inc., saw its coal exports surge 56% year over year to 1.1 million tons, compared to 718,971 tons in the same period in 2017.
