Report: China failed to alert WTO of 7 state trading firms, US claims

The U.S. has notified the World Trade Organization of seven Chinese companies it claimed should have been marked as state trading entities under the trade body's rules, Reuters reported, citing a WTO filing dated Nov. 29 and published Dec. 13.

The list includes three energy and chemicals firms: China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), Sinochem Group and China International Petroleum and Chemicals Co. Ltd. The rest are China Tobacco International Inc., China National Agricultural Means of Production Group Co., Chinatex Corp. and Xinjiang Yin Long International Agriculture Cooperation Co. Ltd.

Chinese WTO representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment, Reuters said.

The U.S. submitted in 2014 a list of 153 enterprises it believed China should declare to the WTO, and has claimed that the latter country has been hiding potentially unfair trading by state-backed firms, the newswire reported.

The new list follows U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer's remarks calling for increased transparency at the WTO and penalties for countries that do not comply with notification rules, the report added.
