Seven & i Holdings Co. Ltd. posted a 3.5% year-over-year increase in the total sales of its convenience stores operated by Seven-Eleven Japan in November.
Same-store sales for Seven-Eleven Japan grew 0.6% from the same period a year ago. The number of customers fell 0.5%, while the average spend per customer rose 1.1%. The number of operating stores rose to 20,700 in November, compared to 20,622 in October.
The company's overseas unit, 7-eleven Inc., posted a 23.9% climb in net sales for the month, mostly driven by a 34.2% increase in gasoline sales but also helped by a 14.7% rise in merchandise sales. Merchandise sales for 7-Eleven Inc.'s existing U.S. stores were up 3.2%.
Ito-Yokado, Seven & i's general merchandise store chain, saw total sales slide 2.2% year over year. Same-store merchandise sales for the unit were down 2.7% as customer numbers fell 1.4% and average customer spend dipped 1.3%.
Meanwhile, York-Benimaru posted a 0.2% increase in total sales, despite a 2.3% decrease in same-store sales. For existing stores, the division posted a 1.2% drop in both average customer spend and in the number of customers.
Seven & i's Sogo & Seibu department store unit reported that same-store sales dropped 2% year over year, while total sales declined 6.1%.
Seven & I Food Systems Co., Ltd. which operates a chain of Denny's restaurants in Japan, posted a 3.9% decrease in total sales. Same-store sales for the subsidiary fell 1.6% during the month as customer numbers slid 5%, offset by a 3.5% jump in average customer spend.
