Panasonic, Vodafone partner to test connected home appliances

Panasonic Corp. and Vodafone Group PLC will work together on a pilot experiment focusing on connected home appliances, with evaluation tests scheduled to take place in Frankfurt in autumn, according to an Aug. 29 announcement.

The alliance will look to design home appliances that are integrated with narrowband internet of things, a low-power wide-area technology that would allow users to connect their devices, using a cellular network, to cloud services via plug and play.

The British multinational telecommunications conglomerate has already provided service using the wireless technology, designed to enable long-distance and low-power communication, the release added.

Products manufactured by the Japanese consumer electronics company, such as air-conditioners, will be tested as part of the joint project that will also explore low-bandwidth functionality for remote control and maintenance.

Meanwhile, Panasonic said it also will also partner with a Japanese mobile operator on a similar project in its home market.
