A tropical storm has formed in the Caribbean, prompting the U.S.'s National Hurricane Center to issue warnings and watches. The agency is monitoring Tropical Storm Dorian's potential to move towards Puerto Rico, among other areas.
The storm has sustained winds of 40 mph, along with higher gusts, and is moving west at about 14 miles per hour.
"Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Dorian could be near hurricane strength by Tuesday [Aug. 27] over the eastern Caribbean Sea," the National Hurricane Center said Aug. 25. "Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Hispaniola should monitor the progress of Dorian."
Puerto Rico is still recovering from Hurricane Maria in September 2017 when the Category Five storm knocked out power to nearly all of the U.S. territory and caused other infrastructure damage.
The center issued a tropical storm warning for Barbados, and a tropical storm watch for St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
