Telefónica inks Netflix tie-up for LatAm; Viacom unit bags LatAm deals

TOP NEWS

* Telefónica SA has struck a partnership with Netflix Inc. to integrate the latter across Telefónica's TV and video platforms in Europe and Latin America, the Spanish telco announced. Launch details for Latin America will be announced in the coming weeks, while rollout in Spain is slated for the end of 2018. The tie-up is expected to boost Telefónica's existing video platforms.

* Viacom Inc.'s Viacom International Media Networks Americas bagged several distribution deals across Latin America for various content from its production and distribution unit Viacom International Studios, NexTV News Latin America reported May 21. 21st Century Fox Inc.'s Fox Networks Latin America bagged rights to Telefe's thriller "Animal," for distribution on linear and nonlinear platforms across all Spanish-speaking Latin America territories. Meanwhile, Colombia's Caracol Television acquired 60-episode tween telenovela "Vikki RPM," and Netflix Inc. bought "Borges," a Porta dos Fundos and Comedy Central co-production.

* América Móvil SAB de CV's Claro Sports and Marca Claro will air 150 games from American college football and basketball leagues over the next three years, in a deal covering 17 Latin American countries, NexTV News Latin America reported May 29. The games will be available on pay TV and over the internet in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.

* Argentina's public radio and TV channels launched Cont.ar, a free over-the-top platform, Telecompaper reported May 21, citing Clarin. The platform features up to 2,000 programs, as well as access to live TV channels such as TV Publica, Paka Paka, Encuentro and DeporTV. Cont.ar will also stream World Cup matches beginning June.

* Telecom Argentina is rolling out its Flow multiscreen service in OTT format, and integrate it with various Smart TV brands, NexTV News Latin America reported May 17. The telco is also planning to integrate other OTTs into Flow, including Netflix.

* Brazil's Claro has begun offering Fox+ and Band Sports, NexTV News Latin America reported May 17, citing Tele.Sintese. Monthly subscription to Fox+ is around 35 Brazilian reals, while Band Sports is offered on a weekly and monthly basis.

* Crackle, the subscription video-on-demand platform of Sony Corp.'s Sony Pictures Television Networks, has secured a streaming deal with Argentinian pay TV and fixed line operator Supercanal Airlink, Telecompaper reported May 10. Following the deal, Crackle will be available on Supercanal's mobile platform, smart TVs, Apple TV, Chromecast, Xbox and PlayStation 4.

* Formula One has rolled out its F1 TV streaming service across Latin America, NexTV News Latin America reported May 10. In Mexico, the top tier costs 169 Mexican pesos a month, or 1,349 pesos a year as a promotional offer. In other territories such as Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Peru, the service is advertised as $8.99 per month, or $71.99 per year.
