Highview Power plans to build a 50-MW/250-MWh cryogenic energy storage facility at a decommissioned thermal power station in the U.K.
The facility will provide grid stability services to National Grid to help integrate renewables and stabilize the system. "Long-duration, giga-scale energy storage is the necessary foundation to enable baseload renewable energy and will be key to a 100% carbon free future," said Highview Power CEO Javier Cavada in an Oct. 21 news release.
The company is now in discussions with potential offtakers to contract for the capabilities and services the facility can provide.
It is developing a portfolio of storage projects in the U.K. and is in the process of securing sites, according to the news release.
