Report: German watchdog orders Audi to remove illegal software or face fines

German vehicle watchdog KBA issued an ultimatum to AUDI AG to remove an illegal software that can manipulate emission levels from thousands of its diesel cars by Sept. 26 or pay steep fines, Reuters reported Sept. 15, citing German-language newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

The KBA reportedly told the Volkswagen AG-owned luxury-car maker that it must uninstall the illicit emission-control software from cars with V6 or V8 diesel engines or pay a €25,000 fine for each car that still carries it.

Audi declined to confirm Bild's report of the regulator's warning but told Reuters that it had almost finished the upgrades for the 8% of the cars in question with completion expected before the KBA-set deadline.

The KBA summoned Audi to a formal hearing over its A6 and A7 diesel models after the German transport ministry said as many as 60,000 cars worldwide may have been fitted with an illegal software emissions device.

Audi's parent, VW, triggered the biggest automotive recall in history after it admitted in 2015 to manipulating U.S. diesel exhaust tests.
