Hampton Roads coal exports spike 60.7% YOY in April

Coal exports from the Hampton Roads port facilities in Virginia increased 60.7% year over year to 4.3 million tons in April and climbed 11.4% from March's total, according to data obtained May 8 from the Virginia Maritime Association.

At Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Lamberts Point facility, which primarily handles metallurgical coal, coal exports reached 1.7 million tons in April, up 35.8% from the 1.3 million tons of coal delivered in the year-ago period.

Kinder Morgan Inc.'s Pier IX facility, which mostly handles thermal coal, rose 90% year over year to 967,923 tons of coal, compared to 509,378 tons in April 2017.

Dominion Terminal Associates LLP, owned by coal producers Contura Energy Inc. and Arch Coal Inc., saw its coal exports surge 79.5% year over year to roughly 1.6 million tons of coal, compared to 879,345 million tons in the same period in 2017.
