Justice Department launches probe into California's deal with 4 automakers

The U.S. Justice Department is investigating four major automakers after they struck a deal with California on vehicle emissions instead of committing to President Donald Trump's plan, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sept. 6.

The antitrust investigation will determine if Ford Motor Co., Volkswagen AG, Honda Motor Co. Ltd., and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG are in violation of federal competition law.

On July 25, the four automakers went beyond Trump's fuel-economy rollback plan by aligning with California's own standards, set independently with a waiver under the Clean Air Act.

Lawyers with the Environmental Protection Agency and Transportation Department wrote to the California Air Resources Board on Sept. 6, saying California's role in the emissions agreement could be "unlawful and invalid."
