France to sue Google, Apple; WhatsApp to stop sharing data with Facebook

TOP NEWS

* The French government is planning to take against and over contracts that the twotech giants imposed on a number of startups and software developers. FrenchFinance Minister Bruno Le Maire plans to bring the two companies before theParis commercial court for abusive trade practices, as he had been notifiedthat both Alphabet Inc.-owned Google and Apple unilaterally imposed contractualdemands on smaller players, mainly tech startups and software developers, Reutersreports, citing the minister's interview with RTL radio.

* WhatsApp has agreed not to share personal data with parentcompany data Facebook Inc. to comply with the upcoming General Data ProtectionRegulation, U.K.'s Information Commission Office revealed. WhatsApp failedto identify a lawful basis for sharing personal data, according to one of thefindings of the ICO.

PAN-EUROPEAN

* The European Commission is drafting a new regulation that woulddemand for online companies' transparency in ranking their search results andreasons for delisting services, Reuters reports. The proposedruling aims to tackle online platforms' prospective harmful trading practices,including those affecting smaller businesses.

UK AND IRELAND

* Ofcom is "considering" Prime Minister Theresa May'sstance before coming up with a decision on whether it would investigate RT'srights to carry broadcasting licenses in the U.K., Reuters reports, citing theBritish broadcaster's spokesman. Ofcom intends to determine whether it is fitand proper for the Russian channel to broadcast in the U.K.

* Facebook has blocked the page of far-right group Britain Firstand the pages of its leaders Paul Golding and Jayda Franse for"repeatedly" publishing posts that incite hate posts against minoritygroups, Reuters reports.

* British Telecom are in talks with union leaders at theCommunications Workers Union, which represents BT workers, to finalize theprovisions for employees, including the final salary scheme, London's The Daily Telegraph reports. About 21,000active members are in BT's final salary pension.

GERMANY,SWITZERLAND AND AUSTRIA

* Microsoft Corp. plans to expand itspublic cloud offering in Germany to support additional businesses andorganizations. The company announced the launch of new IT centers in thecountry.

* Thomas de Buhr, managing director of Twitter Inc.'s German unit,has decided to leave themicroblogging site effective from June 2018, reports Horizont. DeBuhr is leaving the company at his own request after three and a half years.

* ProSiebenSat.1 has entered an agreementwith German web hosting company 1&1. As part of the deal, free and pay-TVstations by ProSiebenSat will be available through its IPTV offer in the longrun.

* German TV streaming service Zattoo has removed Eurosport 1 HDfrom its service, reports Teltarif. The TVstreaming provider had to remove the broadcaster for licensing reasons.

FRANCE

* The supervisory board for Canal Plus Group SA has appointed Frank Cadoret asa member of the management board. Canal Plus is a unit of Vivendi SA.

BENELUX

* Belgian provider Telenet announced that CFO BirgitConix is leaving the company after almost five years, effective June 2018.

* Eight cybersecurity service providers in the Netherlands have established CyberveiligNederland, to increase the digital resilience and transparency within the cybersecuritysector. Computest, Fox-IT, Guardian360, Hoffmann, Motiv, Northwave, QSight ITand Zerocopter have signed the agreement, and others might join later.

* Dutch State Secretary Mona Keijzer yesterday said that the plannedexperiment to test 5G applications in the city of Groningen will not gothrough, reports Dagblad Van Het Noorden. According to Keijzer, the signals ofthe 5G network would clash with radio signals from the nearby village of Burum.

NORDICS

* Telia Co. AB announced that TeliaFinland has launched a new solution for smarter traffic and urban planning. Theservice identifies movement patterns of people, based on anonymized mobilenetwork data.

* Spotify Technology, the parent of Spotify AB, has invited agroup of large investors to a secret meeting in New York, Breakit reports. The meetingtakes places on March 15, the same day as the music streaming service will belive streaming an investor pitch ahead of its public listing. Spotify declinedto comment on the large investors meeting.

SOUTHERN EUROPE

* Shareholders of Spanish toll road operator AbertisInfraestructuras SA agreed to sell the latter's 57% stake in satellite operatorHispasat SA to national grid operator Red Electrica Corp., Telecompaper reports, citing EFE.Abertis shareholders also voted in favor of passing to Red Electrica anobligation to acquire further holdings in Hispasat from Eutelsat CommunicationsSA.

* Altice Portugal SA completed the process of unifying its brandsacross Portugal under the Altice brand, except for local brands that will stillbe used for promoting offers, Telecompaper reports. The Altice NV unitalso rolled out the Meobox 4K Wi-Fi, a portable Wi-Fi set-top box, as well asthe My Meo customer self-care portal.

* Greek commercial broadcaster Mega TV is ceasing operationsfollowing an order from the country's National Council of Radio & Television,Advanced Television reports. Mega TVreportedly failed to get a license under the government's restructure of itsfree-to-air broadcasting scheme.

EASTERN EUROPE

* Ukrainian mobile operator Kyivstar rolled out Kyivstar Go TV, avideo streaming service that offers access to more than 170 TV channels and avideo-on-demand content catalog, Telecompaper reports.

* Mobile Telesystems PJSC unit MGTS plans to purchase Moscow-basedinternet service provider Rinet, Telecompaper reports, citingVedomosti. While MGTS' management has already approved the deal, talks arereportedly still ongoing to resolve some issues.

* Czech telecom watchdog CTU is working with Nokia Corp. toprepare a 5G pilot set in the autumn, Telecompaper reports, citingMobilMania.cz. The 5G test, which are open to mobile operators and businesses,comes prior to the awarding of 5G frequencies and the expected launch of commercial5G in the country by 2021.

* Poland's Office of Electronic Communications, or UKE, launched aconsultation on a proposal requiring the country's cable operators to open uptheir networks to competition, Broadband TV News reports. The proposedmeasure, part of UKE's 2017-2020 strategic plan, would cover Orange SA unitOrange Polska, Netia SA, Liberty Global plc's UPC Polska, Multimedia Polska SA,Inea SA and Toya SA.
