US environmental NGOs file lawsuit against Hudbay's Rosemont project approval

Save the Scenic Santa Ritas, the Arizona Mining Reform Coalition, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Sierra Club filed a lawsuit challenging the U.S. Forest Service's approval of Hudbay Minerals Inc.'s Rosemont copper project in Arizona.

The lawsuit, filed Nov. 27 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona Tucson Division, alleges that the forest service failed to comply with mandatory procedural and substantive requirements before granting the approval.

The plaintiffs said that during the total mine life of up to 30 years, the mine would impact the region's water resources, fish and wildlife, and habitat.

The mine activities are proposed on 995 acres of private lands and 3,653 acres of the Coronado National Forest, and about 5,431 acres would be directly affected by the Rosemont mine.

The complaint alleges that the company has no mitigation plans to address the negative effects on the water table and water quality in the region and the effects from the pit lake to wildlife.
