Carrefour may close 227 DIA stores amid failure to find buyers

Carrefour SA failed to find buyers for 227 of its former DIA stores in France and may have to close them after June 4, Reuters reported May 21, citing a company spokesman.

The French retail giant could find firm or indicative offers for only 46 of the 273 total stores, which it acquired from Spanish supermarket company DIA in 2014, the report added.

Carrefour decided to pull the plug on DIA after the chain was responsible for an operating loss of €150 million in 2016. Carrefour wants to focus on opening 2,000 convenience stores in major cities in the next five years.

The spokesman told the agency that the company will help the 2,100 employees of the 273 shops find employment within Carrefour.
