The majority of banks in peripheral eurozone countries had higher common equity Tier 1 ratios at the midpoint of 2017 than they did six months earlier, according to figures from the European Banking Authority's latest transparency exercise compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
A number of Italian lenders, however, including Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA, Intesa Sanpaolo SpA and Banca Carige SpA, were revealed to have lower CET1 ratios, reflecting in Intesa's case the acquisition of the good parts of two regional Italian lenders. Monte dei Paschi received a state-backed capital injection in the third quarter, after the horizon of the test, while Banca Carige is completing a privately backed capital increase to shore up its own balance sheet.
