Seven & i Holdings Co. Ltd. on Jan. 15 said that total sales across its Seven-Eleven Japan stores increased 3.9% year over year in December.
Same-store sales for Seven-Eleven Japan grew 0.8% from the same period a year ago. The number of customers fell 1.3%, while the average spend per customer rose 2.1%. The number of operating stores remained the same from November.
The company's overseas unit, 7-Eleven Inc., posted a 17.5% increase in net sales for the month, driven by a 21.3% increase in gasoline sales. Merchandise sales for 7-Eleven's existing U.S. stores were up 2.8%.
For Ito-Yokado, Seven & i's general merchandise store chain, total sales declined 0.6% year over year. Same-store merchandise sales for the unit were down 0.9% as customer numbers fell 0.7% and average customer spend dipped 0.1%.
York-Benimaru posted a 1.4% increase in total sales, while same-store sales declined 1%. For existing stores, the division posted a 0.5% increase in average customer spend, with the number of customers down 1.6%.
Seven & i's Sogo & Seibu department store unit reported that same-store sales dropped 1.3% year over year, while total sales declined 5.6%.
Seven & I Food Systems Co. Ltd. posted a 2.4% decrease in total sales. Same-store sales for the subsidiary fell 0.5% during the month as customer numbers slid 4.4%. The average spend per customer increased 4%.
