Netflix to hike UK content spend; Facebook Watch to get exclusive ESPN shows

The Program Guide's global edition highlights recent programming announcements from various networks and online video platforms around the world.

On TV

* Acorn Media Enterprises Ltd. and Sky New Zealand have commissioned "The Sounds," an eight-part psychological thriller, TBI Vision reported. The show follows a couple as they move to a new town to launch a new business. The series will premiere on Acorn TV in the U.S. and in New Zealand on Sky NZ in 2020.

* Channel 4 (UK) commissioned a docuseries that sees participants live alongside the animals they eat. The three-part series, which has a working title "Meat the Family," asks how much people really know about what they put on their plates as four meat-loving families share their homes with the animals they would normally eat.

* Viacom Inc. acquired exclusive cable rights to "Seinfeld" from Sony Pictures Television Inc. for all 180 episodes. All of the series' episodes will air among Viacom's entertainment brands, including Comedy Central (US) and Paramount Network (US), starting October 2021.

* Virgin Media Television Ltd.'s entertainment program "Xposé" will stop airing as part of the channel's revamp, Irish Independent reported. The move comes at a time the company decided to focus on live programming and utilize its new multimillion-euro studio facility.

* ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE secured licensing rights for the British crime series "Gold," Quotenmeter reported. The series will broadcast via Sat.1 Gold (DE) with new episodes.

* Spanish broadcaster Mediapro and Orange Espagne SAU will jointly produce a horror movie, with filming on the production to begin in the fall, Broadband TV News reported. The companies' first co-production is about the disappearance of a group of young hikers.

* British Broadcasting Corp.'s "His Dark Materials," an eight-part adaptation of Philip Pullman's acclaimed series of novels, will have a global premiere on Nov. 3 on BBC One (UK) and BBC iPlayer.

Online

* Facebook Inc. inked a four-year deal with the International Cricket Council to secure exclusive digital content rights until 2023 for global ICC events in the Indian subcontinent. Under the deal, the social media giant will show post-match recaps and in-play key moments and other feature content of the matches in the region.

* Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN Inc. struck a new agreement to bring its exclusive digital shows and content to Facebook's Watch video streaming platform. At launch, ESPN's Facebook Watch lineup will include "The People's MMA Show," additional segments from "Always Late with Katie Nolan" and exclusive versions of "Countdown to GameDay" and "Fantasy Focus Live."

* Snap Inc. unveiled its new slate of Snap Originals, the company's premium, made-for-mobile shows created exclusively for Snapchat's audience. The new slate features docuseries "Tekashi69 VS The World" by Complex, "Nikita Unfiltered" by Sirens Media, "The Honeybeez" by Leftfield Pictures of NY Inc., "Driven" by Big Fish Entertainment and anthology series "Mind Yourself" by Barcroft Studios.

* Netflix Inc. will produce a new South Korean original series titled "Move to Heaven." The show follows a man with Asperger's who runs a trauma cleaning business with his uncle.

* WarnerMedia LLC's upcoming streaming service, HBO Max, ordered a two-season revival of the animated series "The Boondocks," Variety reported. The 24 new episodes along with the 55 episodes of the original series will come to HBO Max in fall 2020.

* Hulu LLC opted not to move forward with Marvel's live-action series, "Ghost Rider," Variety reported. According to a source with knowledge of the matter, the two parties split due to a creative impasse.

* Actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge signed an overall deal with Amazon.com Inc. that is believed to be worth around $20 million a year, Variety reported. Under the deal, Waller-Bridge will create and produce new television content for Amazon Studios that will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

* Netflix will spend more on British productions in 2020, Reuters reported. CEO Reed Hastings said the company will make a "big increase" in its investment in U.K.-made content next year, citing the country's "phenomenal" storytelling capabilities.

* South Korean telecom operator LG U+ will exclusively release six French drama series on its IPTV service U+tv in partnership with France-based TV network TV5MONDE SA, iNews 24 reported. The titles include crime drama "L'art du crime," and spy thriller "The Bureau."
