SunPower begins building 8.79-MW solar plant at new Toyota headquarters in Texas

SunPower Corp. on April 10 announced the beginning of construction on an 8.79-MW solar plant at Toyota Motor Corp.'s North American headquarters in Plano, Texas.

The company will install over 20,000 E-series solar panels providing enough power to offset approximately 33% of the energy requirements of the headquarters.

"As a long-standing solar adviser, SunPower is helping us realize Toyota's 2050 global environmental challenge to eliminate carbon emissions in all operations," Toyota's Regional Director of North American Environmental Division Kevin Butt said in a statement.

Toyota will purchase power through a long-term power purchase agreement at competitive rates, and Toyota will own the renewable energy credits associated with the system.

Toyota is planning to achieve LEED Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council through incorporating various energy efficient technologies in the design of the headquarters.
