Second man in coal executive's death convicted of murder

A few days after his trial began, the second man indicted in the death of former Patriot Coal Corp. President and CEO Bennett Hatfield has been convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit robbery, the Associated Press reported Dec. 8

Brandon Lee Fitzpatrick, 20, of Louisa, Ky., pleaded guilty after he admitted that he was with 22-year-old Anthony Arriaga, of Gibsonburg, Ohio, when the latter killed Hatfield in a scheme to steal his GMC Yukon Denali and sell its parts.

Arriaga was convicted in October of murder, robbery and conspiracy. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 12.

Hatfield was found dead in a Mingo County, W.Va., cemetery in May 2016 where he had gone to visit his wife's grave. Hatfield had worked in executive or management positions for Patriot Coal Corp., Foresight Energy LP, Arch Coal Inc., and others.
