The Mexican Congress on June 6 formally asked Banco de México to identify the hackers behind the April and May cyberattacks on Mexican banks, El Financiero reported.
In a letter to the central bank, the Congress requested to know the causes and the extent of the attacks on Banxico's interbank payment system known as the SPEI.
Through the exposure, money was illegally siphoned from fake accounts at several Mexican financial institutions. Hackers are thought to have stolen between 300 million and 400 million Mexican pesos.
The central bank has previously said prosecutors are close to making arrests over the case and that 80% of Mexican banking transactions are now operating normally within the central bank payment system.
Meanwhile, Banxico has formed an information security task force in the wake of the attacks, and set new guidelines for financial institutions using the SPEI system, including setting restrictions on the amounts, timing and delivery of transactions.
Through the SPEI, the central bank provides a private, encrypted network in which users can electronically transfer money between deposit accounts.
As of June 5, US$1 was equivalent to 20.39 Mexican pesos.
